World number 2 TesterAVI has won Dubai Duty Free Championships on Monday, beating Jmills in the final, 6-2, 6-2. It is Tester's first title of the season, and eleventh career title.

Nadal Spain

The new world number 2 and last year's Roland Garros champion from Spain has arrived in Dubai as one of the favorites but it was unsure whether he was in top form after a straight sets loss to Jmills in Rio Open, on his favorite surface - clay.

On the other hand, Tester had ended the 2020 season in an impressive fashion, by winning the ITST World Tour Finals. He had high hopes for the first grand slam of the season in Australia, but failed to play his R1 match.

He was quick to brush off the disappointment at not competing for his second grand slam title and proceeded to win Dubai without dropping a set.

Packed field in Dubai adds to the weight of Tester's title

There was no shortage of strong contenders in Dubai. ITST greats such as Pidzi and Vramvrim hoped to snatch a title in 2021 whereas new challengers such as JiJo, Rharm, and Jayfin were hoping to win this prestigious 500 tournament for the first time.

Looking at his draw, Tester's path looked rather difficult. He faced Andre Tomas from Portugal in the first round, winning 6-4, 6-3, and then had an easier job vs Debuffy in R2. His victim in the quarterfinal was the outspoken Italian Kenos who he had dispatched 6-2, 6-2.

In the semifinal waited the clash with the veteran Pidzi who upset JiJo in the quarterfinal and was hoping to go back to his winning ways. Tester had different ideas, and showed little mercy to the ageing Slovak, defeating him 6-3, 6-2.

The final proved to be an even shorter affair with Tester avenging his Rio Open loss and making quick work of Jmills, 6-2, 6-2. The Brit was in good form and yet remained powerless against Tester.

All eyes now turn to BNP Paribas Open at Indian Wells where Tester will hunt for yet another title. He's definitively the player to watch this spring and has already proven he can beat anyone when in good form.
